HOW DO YOU KNOW YOUR SEWER LINE IS CLOGGED?

Think of your home's plumbing system like the arteries in your body: They're all necessary, and they all perform important tasks ... but just as the arteries are connected to the aorta, those fixtures, drains, and pipes in your home are connected to the main sewer line, which is the largest and most important piece of plumbing you have.

Just like your aorta can slowly be filled with plaque as you get older, so too can your main sewer line gradually fill with sediment and waste until it closes off and becomes clogged — or even collapses. When that happens, your home basically has a "heart attack," because that's a problem in need of immediate attention.

At Superior Plumbing, we're not doctors, but we are trained plumbing professionals. We can take care of your clogged line, but we also want you to know what can cause them to clog in the first place, and what you need to look out for to prevent it from happening, so that you save yourself money and inconvenience.

Common Causes

  • Severe Pipe Damage: When sewer pipes are broken or ruptured, the sewage won’t be able to properly drain through the system — leading to immediate and frequent backups.

  • A Sagging Sewer: Sagging sewer lines happen over time, when soil conditions, erosion or just the general shifting of the ground causes the pipe to belly, or bow.

  • Tree Root Infiltration: As roots grow, they search for water. If they latch onto a sewer pipe, they can grow into the pipe in order to reach the water that it carries. As the roots expand , they can cause frequent clogs and will eventually cause the pipe to collapse.

  • Flushing Debris down the Toilet: Treating your toilet as a garbage can will cause sewer drain issues. The rule of thumb when flushing the toilet is to make sure you only flush human waste and toilet paper.

  • Pouring Grease Down the Drain: Grease, fats, and oil are a common culprit when it comes to clogged sewer lines. It’s not a good idea to pour these things down a drain. They will harden when cooled, causing a clog in your sewer line.
